In terms of gameplay, at first glance I Am Alive seems to follow the now familiar third-person survival-horror formula of games like Resident Evil. Told through a series of video recordings, the voice acting and storyline - while depressingly bleak - are incredibly compelling, with a protagonist you can’t help but root for and a tone that’s a refreshing change from the normally hackneyed narratives you find crammed into similar titles (Capcom, I’m looking at you). The story is smartly told and surprisingly poignant bearing more in common with Cormac McCarthy’s The Road than Road Warrior. Our hero returns to his home town of Haverton, only to find the former Anytown, USA reduced to crumbling ruins inhabited by toxic dust storms, marauding gang members and a few desperate survivors.
